Sustainable fashion is clothing, shoes, bags and other accessories that are manufactured with the environment and planet in mind also taking into account soci-economic factors. The aim is to minimize any undesirable environmental effect of the product's life cycle by making sure that natural and renewable resources are used. It also means a company's entire process from design, to production, to manufacturing, to marketing, to transport, storage, to final sale of the product, to use, reuse, repair, recycle is all also sustainable.
Sustainable fashion is also about being transparent. So not just slapping a label or saying that your clothing brand is sustainable but actually showing the consumer in everything that you do when making and selling your brand. The first every brand that I learned about sustainability from was Stella McCartney which launched back in the early 2000s. That was the first time I had ever heard of clothing being sustainable. Stella McCartney was a sustainable fashion company/brand before sustainability became the trend that it has become today.
Since the early 2000s to now 2020 there are so many brands that are sustainable from Reformation, to Everlane to Nanushka just to name a few. Purchasing from brands that are considered sustainable fashion brands can be a bit pricey. But it is worth it because you know that you are getting quality items that will last you for a very long time that you can re-wear over and over again for years to come. Sustainable is much better for the planet and environment than fast fashion.
So financially buying sustainably will help you buy less and since you know you spent a lot of money on an item you're probably more likely to keep it for a longer time instead of throwing it out because it fell apart after a few wears or because it was so cheap. If you think about it, it will even out because with fast fashion you are constantly having to buy more and more of it. Even though it is cheap you are buying a large quantity of it which adds up. With sustainable fashion you may buy one item that is the equivalent of several items at a fast fashion chain. But your sustainable item will outlive and outlast your fast fashion item.
