Fair Isle is is a specific type of multi-colored, geometric patterned knitwear that originated on the island of Fair Isle in Scotland's Shetland archipelago. Characterized by a traditional palette of 5-6 colors, but with only two colors used per row, it is a stranded knitting technique where unused yarn is carried across the back to create a warm, non-reversible fabric. Today, the term is sometimes used more broadly to describe any knitwear with colorful, geometric patterns.
